The 14 Best Divorce and Family Lawyers in Paris

Paris family lawyers range from solo avocats who combine divorce with criminal work to firms that handle nothing but separations, children and family assets. The right choice depends on whether you and your spouse agree, whether a home or a business must be divided, and whether the marriage has links to another country.

This guide lists avocats whose own websites confirm they practise family law in Paris. For each one we note what they focus on, how consultations work and, where their site shows it, whether they work in English.

How to choose Divorce and Family Lawyers in Paris

  1. Know which divorce you needA judge-free divorce by mutual consent needs full agreement and one lawyer per spouse. If you disagree about children or money, choose a lawyer used to hearings before the juge aux affaires familiales.
  2. Look at the assetsWhen a home, a business or savings abroad are involved, ask how the lawyer works with notaires on the liquidation of the matrimonial regime and the prestation compensatoire.
  3. Check the international angleIf you married abroad or one spouse lives outside France, ask early which country's courts and law apply, because filing first in the right place can matter.
  4. Agree the fees in writingA written fee agreement is compulsory. Ask whether the fee is fixed or hourly, whether a success fee applies and whether you qualify for legal aid.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a divorce lawyer in Paris cost?

It varies with the type of divorce, the assets involved and how long any dispute lasts. Many lawyers offer a flat fee for divorce by mutual consent and charge contested cases by the hour, always under a written fee agreement. Legal aid can cover part or all of the cost if your income is below the threshold.

Can we share one lawyer for an amicable divorce?

No. A divorce by mutual consent requires each spouse to have their own lawyer. The two lawyers draft the agreement, each spouse has a 15-day reflection period after receiving it, and the signed agreement is then filed with a notaire.

What should I bring to the first meeting?

Bring your marriage certificate and livret de famille, any marriage contract, your children's birth certificates, recent payslips and tax notices, and a list of property, loans and savings. In an international case, add documents showing where each spouse lives and works.
